Unless you haven’t lived in Singapore before, you’re probably familiar with Star Awards, a yearly awards ceremony that Mediacorp hosts to recognise outstanding actors, hosts and those who work behind the scenes in Channel 8 shows.

Wait, it still exists meh?

Yes, yes it does.

Star Awards 2022 is coming back this year on 24 April with the theme “When the stars align, dreams come true”, and here’s all you need to know about the most popular awards show in Singapore!

It’s Chen Hanwei’s First Time Hosting Solo

Though some of us may be used to seeing hosts like Quan Yi Fong and Guo Liang host Star Awards year after year, it’s evident that the ceremony will be taking a different turn this year.

Usually, Star Awards have at least two hosts, but this year, we have the well-loved Mediacorp ahge (big brother) Chen Hanwei hosting solo!

It’s also Chen’s first time hosting Star Awards as well as being a solo anchor, which might come as a surprise to some of us given that he’s appeared on our screens so often.

Mediacorp even started a short series, “The Host’s Journey”, to document Chen’s preparation journey as a first-time solo awards ceremony host, and you can watch the first episode of the series here!

It’ll Be Held at The Theatre at Mediacorp

Unlike last year’s awards at Jewel Changi Airport, the awards ceremony will be hosted at The Theatre at Mediacorp this year.

It’s at the heart of Mediacorp’s new campus after moving from its former Caldecott site, and it’s the fifth time the venue will be used for Star Awards.

18 Awards Will Be Presented

Yup, even I didn’t realise that there were that many Star Awards awards.

If you’re like me and can’t remember any of the award names beyond Best Actor and Best Actress, not to fret, because here’s the entire list!

The list of awards are:

  • Best Actor
  • Best Actress
  • Best Supporting Actor
  • Best Supporting Actress
  • Best Programme Host (Entertainment & Infotainment)
  • Evergreen Artiste Award
  • Young Talent Award
  • Best Drama Serial
  • Best Entertainment Programme
  • Best Entertainment Special Programme
  • Best Infotainment Programme
  • Best Short-form Drama Serial
  • Best Short-form Entertainment Programme
  • Best Theme Song
  • Best Radio Programme
  • Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes
  • Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes
  • All-Time Favourite Artiste Award

For those of you going “I didn’t even know that they opened up a whole new category for short-form shows”, now you do.

Giant Zoom Wall to Call Your Favourite Artistes

What you’ll see on the day itself is literally what you’re reading.

During the Walk of Fame this year, Mediacorp will be setting up a large zoom board along the red carpet to allow fans of various artistes to video call them from home.

That way, you can say hi to Zoe Tay and be on national television at the same time. I don’t know about you, but that seems like a pretty good deal.

Of course, don’t be creepy or weird, because then the whole of Singapore will get to see your antics as well.

There’ll Be a Robot Escort for the First Time

Even longtime fans of the awards show will be able to see something new this year with the introduction of a new robot escort, LeoBot.

LeoBot, a locally produced robot escort, will be responsible for delivering the awards to the various recipients on the day itself.

Clearly, it’s going to be a rather different process than last years’, but hey, it’s the best that can be done during a pandemic, right?

And who said you can’t have a cool awards ceremony while adhering to safe management measures?

New Elements for Backstage Commentary Marathon

If you thought that the giant Zoom wall’s going to be the only new feature about the Star Awards, you couldn’t be more wrong.

Building on the seven-hour long backstage commentary marathon that was introduced to our screens last year, Mediacorp will be adding in several new elements to make the entire experience more entertaining and interactive for audience members watching at home.

One such element will be the MyPICK! Awards, which will be a mini awards ceremony held during the commentary marathon itself. There will be various one-of-a-kind categories during this awards ceremony, and they include:

  • Favourite CP
  • Male / Female Show Stealer
  • Most Hated Villain
  • Perfect Combo
  • Most Attention-seeking New Gen Host

I don’t know about you, but Most Hated Villain sounds like either a huge recognition for your acting abilities, or it just says that you’ve got a super-serious case of RBF.

With these awards exclusively presented during the pre-show marathon, don’t miss out!

New Names in Best Actor, Best Actress Lineup

Amidst usual nominees for Best Actor like Chen Hanwei, we’re also seeing a few new additions to the lineup this year.

In particular, Xu Bin has been nominated for his work in My Star Bride, the hit TV show that actually got a sequel in terms of a movie! As the main character recovering from a coma and paralysis, his stellar acting has bagged him a spot in the nominations for Best Actor for the first time in his decade-long career.

Another fresh face in this list is Jeremy Chan, who many of us may be more familiar with as a host. Acting as his real-life wife Jesseca Liu’s on-screen husband as well, his performance in Crouching Tiger Hidden Ghost has also placed him in the running for this highly-coveted award.

As for the ladies, Chantalle Ng, who was a hot contender for various awards last year but left empty-handed, is the newest addition to the list of nominees for Best Actress.

Like Xu, Ng is also nominated for her work in My Star Bride. She acted as Xu’s on-screen Vietnamese partner and wife, earning much praise for her accurate and engaging portrayal of the role.

Other familiar faces who are nominated for the Best Actress award are Huang Biren, Joanne Peh, Jesseca Liu and Ya Hui.

Number of Nominations Back to Five

Though the number of nominations last year was increased to a whopping seven, Mediacorp has also revealed through the nominations list that the number of nominees per award will be lowered back to the regular five this year.

The 2020 edition of the show got cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was later combined with the 2021 edition, which accounts for the larger pool of nominees since more shows are being taken into consideration.

Of course, this just means less competition for the artistes who are nominated, which should be a good thing… Unless you’re not nominated, I guess?

Dennis Chew and Zheng Ge Ping to be Named All-Time Favourite Artistes

Those who’ve been loyal fans of the show are no stranger to the prestigious All-Time Favourite Artiste award.

But for those who have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s an award that an artiste receives after winning 10 times in the Top 10 Male/Female Artistes Award, which is no mean feat given that the results are decided by public voting.

Former recipients of this award include Fann Wong, Christopher Lee, Li Nanxing and Rui En, and two more of Singapore’s finest are about to join this group of elites too.

By receiving their tenth Top 10 Male Artistes Award during last year’s ceremony, Dennis Chew, most well-known for his role “Aunty Lucy”, as well as Zheng Ge Ping will be awarded this award during this year’s ceremony.

Pornsak, Ann Kok, Felicia Chin, Rebecca Lim to be Next in Line for All-Time Favourites

Besides the two men who will receive the All-Time Favourite Artiste Awards this year, there are also several contenders who are just one step away from doing the same during next year’s ceremony.

For male actors, popular host Pornsak has already accumulated nine Top 10 Male Artistes Awards, having won the award in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021.

As for the ladies, actresses Ann Kok, Felicia Chin and Rebecca Lim have also attained a total of nine awards each for the Top 10 Female Artistes Awards, with fan favourite Felicia Lim narrowly missing out on a spot last year.
