Bungee jumping is one of the many things you’d surely avoid if you’re overweight. Who wants to risk the health hazards and potential mishaps?

But what goes down must come back up when local content creator Mayiduo chose to partake in the extreme sport.

No, he doesn’t like the adrenaline; he was hooked to a rope and plunged 50m down as he had made a bold promise during a Shopee livestream. He said he’d bungee jump if he hit a sales target of $99,000.

And well, he exceeded it.

Exceeded Sales Target, Raking in $102,000 in Sales for Shopee

In a daring feat, local content creator Mayiduo, known as Ah Beng or his real name Kelvin Tan, made a playful promise during a Shopee livestream.

On 8 September, the 30-year-old content creator hosted a livestream for the e-commerce site as part of their 9.9 Shopee Super Shopping Day sales event, where he boldly declared: “I will go bungee jump if I hit the KPI. Sales target: $99,000.”

At the time, he probably thought this ambitious sales target was a distant dream, making it a challenge for viewers. Given that he mentioned this earlier in the livestream, it perhaps prompted more viewers to help with the sales to see him participate in the extreme sport.

However, to Mayiduo’s surprise, the goal was met and exceeded, with a remarkable $102,000 in sales, which left him with no choice but to honour his word.

He had to face the music, or in this case, the bungee cord.

At the end of the two-hour livestream, Mayiduo announced that he would honour his promise and bungee jump on 9 September at SkyPark by AJ Hackett in Sentosa.

Mayiduo was one of the influencers engaged by the platform to conduct e-commerce livestreams for their 9 September promotions. Shopee has also engaged with Xiaxue to help promote the day with an advertisement featuring both influencers.

Concerns over His Weight for the Stunt

Amidst concerns about his weight, which he addressed confidently, Mayiduo took the leap, literally, at Skypark by AJ Hackett in Sentosa.

Some viewers were quick to express their concern about the stunt, to which Mayiduo replied, “I think all will be good. We trust in the Singapore system. If they allow them to operate the bungy jump, it means all these safety checks are tested.

“And confirm they cater for a situation in case a bui kia (overweight kid) like me, 108kg, want to go and jump,” he added.

Although Mayiduo might be the happy-go-lucky content creator we know, he’s also human with fears, and he’s a dad to a three-year-old.

Speaking to Asiaone, Mayiduo said his wife was also worried. She pointed out that this sport is typically for average-sized folks, not someone severely obese like himself.

But he got the green light to take on the challenge from the Shopee team and was ready to take the plunge.

On that Saturday evening, Mayiduo’s wife and son were also present to give him some moral support.

Overcoming His Fears

Though nervous to climb up the stairs of the 17-storey tower at Skypark Sentosa to jump off the 50m tower, the staff prepared him, and he walked towards the platform’s edge for the jump. He donned a bright orange shirt to represent Shopee.

Just before he jumped down, he said: “I love my mum, I love my kid, I regret a bit.”

And then, he did it.

With a GoPro camera, he conquered his fear with excitement and regret. He shouted Hokkien profanities, then resorted to singing the Shopee 9.9 jingle along the way.

At one point, he exclaimed: “Why I do these l** j*** things!”

When he was finally lowered safely to ground level, he said: “Aiya, easy one.”

Weighing in at 108kg, Mayiduo is safe to bungee jump at the Skypark Sentosa by AJ Hackett. According to its website, their minimum solo jump weight is 45kg, while their maximum is 150kg.

This meant that his weight safely fell within the guidelines for bungee jumping set by Skypark Sentosa.

On their frequently asked questions page, Skypark Sentosa by AJ Hackett clarified that bungee jumping is generally safe for all and that they have a solid track record of four million safe jumps worldwide.

Their statement read: “You will NOT die whilst bungy Jumping at an AJ Hackett site. Not only did we invent the sport, but we have been doing it for over 30 years, with 4 million safe jumps worldwide. The odds are pretty well stacked up.”

Mayiduo’s adventure turned out to be a thrilling ride, and it’s safe to say that he took pride in the credibility of AJ Hackett’s care and advice.
