On Tuesday morning (20 Apr), a lorry carrying 17 migrant workers crashed into a stationary tipper truck on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE).

All 17 men were rushed to the hospital, but one worker, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man, died of his injuries.

Sadly, another worker has since succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased worker, Mr Sugunan Sudheeshmon, hails from Kerala, India. He passed away at the age of 28.

According to non-profit organisation ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), a counsellor from IRR has been speaking to Mr Sugunan’s mother, who is a domestic worker here.

She had visited her son in hospital on Thursday night before he died.

“We are in contact with his mother, who is also working in Singapore, to extend our assistance and deepest condolences to her and the family”, the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) said in a Facebook post today (23 Apr).

Mr Sugunan leaves behind his wife and 18-month-old child. His wife is not yet aware of her husband’s death.

MWC said it is currently applying for compensation through the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA), and is gathering the necessary documentation for the claim.

33YO Bangladeshi Was Sole Breadwinner of Family

The first casualty, Mr Toffazal Hossain, died from his injuries in hospital on the day of the accident.

The 33-year-old Bangladeshi is survived by his parents, three sisters who are all married, a younger brother who is still studying, his wife, and a two-year-old son.

He was the sole breadwinner of his family.

The MWC said it is in touch with the victim’s brother and wife to find out what sort of assistance they require.

Five Workers Still in Hospital 

Five workers are still in the hospital, one of whom has been moved from the intensive care unit to the high dependency unit.

Nine were discharged on the day of the accident after being treated for minor injuries.

According to The Straits Times, the lorry was making its way to a worksite in Woodlands at the time of the accident.

The police said they were alerted to an accident on the PIE towards Changi Airport before the Jalan Bahar exit at 6.06am.

When they arrived, two people were found trapped in the rear compartment of the lorry and had to be rescued using hydraulic equipment.

The police arrested a 36-year-old male lorry driver for careless driving causing death.
