Shopping malls are icons of consumerism in many countries around the world, including Singapore.

From clothing, to food, toys, and groceries, shopping malls are like a one-stop place to get your needs and wants.

However, when a shopping mall isn’t safe, the following accidents and injuries could commonly happen.

  • Escalator accidents
  • Slips and falls
  • Falling objects

Unfortunately, someone got injured in one such shopping mall incident that happened in Singapore yesterday.

Man Fell from 4th Storey in Chinatown Point

Yesterday (9 Jan), a man fell from the fourth storey of Chinatown Point and subsequently landed on the second storey.

A security officer on duty immediately provided assistance while Chinatown Point’s management team called for an ambulance. He was rushed to Singapore General Hospital.

The spokesman for Perennial Retail Management said that the property’s Management Corporation Strata Title (MCST) appointed the man as a worker to carry out maintenance works in the premises.

Thankfully, he was conscious when taken to the hospital. The incident did not reportedly hurt any other shoppers.

You may be wondering, how did the incident even happen?

Wooden Board Allegedly Gave Way

A 13-minute video capturing the incident was uploaded onto YouTube yesterday, showing the scene of the man lying face down after he fell.

Some members of the public came to his aid. People donned in personal protective equipment (PPE) then turned the man onto his back before placing him onto a stretcher.

Many shoppers stood around to watch the aftermath of the incident.

In the background, some onlookers gave their commentary about the incident in Mandarin. Apparently, a wooden board allegedly gave way which resulted in the worker falling through it.

At the 00:16 mark, one lady also asked in Mandarin “Wasn’t he wearing safety belts?”

Level 4 Cordoned Off

Currently, investigations are ongoing, and the area on level four of Chinatown Point is out of bounds to shoppers.

The spokesman has also added that they will be cooperating with the property’s MCST and relevant authorities.

Not the First Shopping Mall Incident

Shopping mall incidents have not been a common occurrence in Singapore. However, this isn’t the first time someone got injured after objects fall.

Last year, two cinema goers got injured after a ventilation duct fell from the cinema hall ceiling.

Yup, I’m talking about the incident that happened in NEX shopping mall.

In addition, on average, there is almost one escalator accident in Singapore every single day.
