While many of us may be privileged enough to go home every day safe and sound, not everyone does.

Unfortunately, many don’t, and this is especially so for migrant workers who travel to faraway countries to work and support their families.

Migrant Worker’s Leg Amputated Due To Workplace Accident

On 25 January, ItsRainingRaincoats, a migrant worker support community, posted Vinoth, a 24-year-old Indian migrant worker’s story on Facebook.

In December last year, Vinoth’s leg had to be amputated after an accident at his workplace which caused his leg to be crushed by a steel plate that fell.

The post also mentioned how his leg “had to be amputated to save his life” after his leg contracted an infection.

Crowdfunding for His Medical Bills

After the incident, Vinoth’s colleagues decided to set up a crowdfunding project on Give.Asia in the hopes of pooling money together for his medical and rehabilitation fees.

The website detailed his experience and circumstances back at home, where his family is not financially well-to-do.

This makes his job in Singapore even more crucial.

Although there is a workman compensation of $45,000, it is subject to the insurance company’s approval. It is also barely enough for Vinoth’s medical bills, which is estimated to be about $164,000 or even more.

Additionally, the page also mentioned how Vinoth’s company has “done all they could in order to help Vinoth”.

The company is considering helping Vinoth with acquiring a prosthetic leg, as well as offering him light duties so that Vinoth can still stay employed in Singapore and provide a better life for his family.

Vinoth has since been discharged according to an update posted on the crowdfunding page, and he will undergo physiotherapy sessions in order to get more accustomed to moving around with one leg, as well as to prepare for a prosthetic in the future.

How Can You Contribute?

Currently, the fundraiser has raised $81,418 out of its $150,000 goal.
