Singapore may be a low-crime city, but it’ll never be a no-crime city. So keep your guard up, and keep your eyes out.

You might end up with an item stolen if you don’t.

Stolen Phone

On Monday (1 May), Facebook user RX Cau posted on a Malaysian-Singaporean Lifestyle exchange public Facebook group asking the public for help identifying a thief.

While cleaning up the shop after a day’s work, the employee left his phone on one of the tables at the food establishment. At the time, there was no one else around.

He only realised his phone was gone when he was retrieving it from the table, and upon checking the CCTV, he found that a nearby delivery rider had swiped the phone away when no one was looking.

In the video posted in the original post, the delivery rider had initially walked past the table with the phone but then came back shortly and sat precisely at the table where the phone was.

He freight oblivion for a while before looking left and right to check that the area was clear and made his move to steal the phone.

It appears that the delivery rider was there to pick up an order and decided the phone was finders, keepers.

Appealing to the public, the user asked anyone who recognised the thief to reach out to him and return his phone. He stated that the police had been notified of this incident, and if no return were made, he would that the case further.

The internet, however, was less empathetic to OP’s case.

Some netizens were faulting Cau’s carelessness in leaving his phone on the table:

Others left constructive suggestions, saying how OP should contact the food delivery company for further assistance.

Or even better, Op should have left his phone behind the counter and not at the table, which is highly accessible to the public.

While there have yet to be any updates on whether the phone was returned to the owner at the time of writing, this shows that we can’t take our safety here for granted.
