Certain things are inevitable; ERP 2.0 will come, a 20% CPF deduction will always occur every month, and password sharing of streaming services will not last forever.

Netflix ended it last year. This year, Disney+ is joining in.

Here’s what to expect if you, Peter, Susan, and all members of your family like to watch Iron Man together… all in different parts of Singapore.

Spoiler alert: you won’t be able to do that soon.

Disney+ Also Ending Password Sharing from June 2024

Yes, it’s happening.

Disney is set to enforce stricter measures against password sharing on its Disney+ platform, aiming to increase sign-ups and overall revenue.

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, revealed in a recent interview with CNBC that the crackdown will commence in June in select countries and expand wider by September.

Despite the terms of service for Disney+ and other Disney streaming services prohibiting the use of another person’s login credentials (you know, the “I agree” that everyone ticks without reading), enforcement has been lenient until now.

Hulu, another streaming service under Disney that isn’t available in Singapore, initiated a policy on 14 March to restrict the frequency of account login information being shared outside of a subscriber’s household.

The decision to implement stricter controls comes in the wake of Netflix’s success in significantly boosting its subscriber base following a similar crackdown.

Netflix experienced a substantial increase in new accounts, adding 100,000 subscribers in the two days following the implementation of its new password sharing policy in May last year.

Bob Iger regarded it as the “gold standard,” and would like Disney+ to emulate Netflix’s success.

You can watch this video to know why and how Netflix did it:

In May 2023, Netflix expanded its crackdown on password sharing to over 100 countries, including Singapore.

Netflix users in Singapore on the Standard and Premium tiers can share their account with someone who doesn’t live in the same household, but they have to pay an extra fee. For the Standard tier, users can add 1 extra member, while Premium tier users can add 2 extra members.

The extra members will have their own account and password, but the primary account holder is responsible for paying the membership fee.
