If you’re still wondering about the question of how bad can it be if we just left restaurants open, well look no further here, because NHK, Japan’s public broadcasting organisation, just conducted an experiment to show exactly that.

Wash your hands and tuck in your blanket before reading on as the results can be quite terrifying…

Unless you’re one of those people who wants to watch the world burn, of course.

Experiment: Buffet Scenario

The scenario: 10 participants in a buffet just doing their normal buffet things with a buffet of various hot and cold dishes and drinks.

Invisible fluorescent paint was applied to the palm of one person. Basically, this is like patient zero who coughed into his hand. All images below are from the video unless stated otherwise.

The invisible fluorescent paint is visible only under black light:

Reader Bao: Oi, that guy want to die ar? Where his mask?

You can eat with mask on meh?

Reader Bao: Yes.

Participants were then allowed to enjoy the buffet for 30 minutes. So here’s some jpg-compression food porn.

Though this got me interested in the perks and pay for a buffet experiment volunteer, this isn’t what this article is about.

30 minutes is up and it’s time for the results.

Brace yourselves…

Boom. All over the table.

All over “patient zero”.

The common serving utensil.

The beverage handle isn’t spared.

Even unto other people. Some had paint on their hands and exactly three got paint on their faces.

Sleep well tonight, my friend. We ain’t going back to restaurants the same way after seeing this.

Alternate Version Of Experiment (No Video)

The scientists for the experiment also set up another buffet with different measures to protect against infection.

Dishes were separated, common utensils replaced more frequently and diners were encouraged to clean their hands before, during and after the meal.

We’re not sure what “encouraged” means since this can range from “kind lady smiling at you while telling you the benefits of washing hands” to “holding a spiked metal bat while menacingly pointing towards the washing basin”.

Either way, this time the paint spread 97% less compared to the one you saw. None ended on other participants’ faces.

Reader Bao: Boo! We’ve read a similar experiment two months ago already!

We have?

Reader Bao: YouTubers Did An Experiment To Show How Easily The Flu Spreads & The Results Are Scary

Damn, you’re right. But more science is usually good since it provides even more proof and that previous experiments weren’t bogus or biased somehow.

Still, I’m severely disappointed…

In my colleagues.

Who didn’t recognise these beautiful faces and called the Mythbusters legends Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman “YouTubers”.

But hey, what’s the point, right? For all you know, buffets might not be open in Singapore until 2073. Who knows.
