With so many cases settled over the issue of breaching Covid-19 rules during Circuit Breaker:

You know that sooner or later, we’ll hear about Sun Plaza lady.

And on 14 July, there’s been an update on her case.

Sun Plaza Woman Fully Discharged & Not Punished for Offences; Have to Go IMH for Assessment & Treatment

Kasturi Govindasamy Retnamsamy, the 40-year-old Singaporean who used very flowery language when confronted for not wearing a mask during the Circuit Breaker period, has been given an “absolute discharge” by the courts.

Basically, an absolute discharge means she won’t be punished for the offences that she committed.

The deputy prosecutor had said that Kasturi has been in remand for two months and suffers from a psychiatric condition.

To extend the case even longer won’t be in Kasturi’s or the public’s interest.

Kasturi had previously pleaded guilty to three offences:

  • harassment
  • using criminal force on a policewoman
  • flouting the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act

Previously, she was also found to be unsuitable for Mandatory Treatment Order (MTO) or a Day Reporting Order (DRO) for reasons that were not revealed.

Delusional Disorder

Kasturi’s lawyer, Ms Diana Ngiam, revealed that her client has delusional disorder, a condition where she can’t tell what is real and what is not.

Previously, she claimed to have “multiple personalities” and “is in a lot of pain”.

Kasturi will have to go to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for assessment and treatment.

The Sun Plaza Saga

For those who have no idea why Sun Plaza lady is such a big deal, here’s a short summary of what she did.

On 29 Apr, she made her first appearance at Sun Plaza and sat in the mall without a mask. When confronted by safe-distancing ambassadors, she started using flowery words with them.

She was issued a composition fine of $300 for this.

On 9 May, it was revealed that Kasturi made her second appearance in Sun Plaza and was arrested after making a scene and injuring a police officer.
