Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim is a new Member of Parliament in Chua Chu Kang GRC for Keat Hong, and had won the election last month with fellow new MP Don Wee Boon Hong, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong and Minister of State Low Yen Ling.

He took over from Zaqy Mohamad, who went to Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC instead.

The 40-year-old is a partner in a law firm, and has two law degrees: a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (Hons) from NUS and a Master’s Degree in Law (Islamic Law and Finance)  from SMU.

Yesterday, someone posted something about Zhulkarnain that’d definitely warrant a response.

In it, the Facebook user alleged that someone has said that once, Zhulkarnain visited an elderly couple. The husband asked if they could build another lift, and Zhulkarnain  allegedly explained why it was not possible to do so and added, “If you’re dissatisfied, just move out.”

The Facebook user then said that even when she’s an opposition supporter, she respected the previous MP, Zaqy Mohamad, as he always “spoke with respect and with grace to everyone.”

So, is this true?

Zhulkarnain: False

Well, Zhulkarnain didn’t just deny the allegations. Instead, he posted an “Important Announcement”.

Here’s his Facebook post:

Lest you can’t read:

[Important announcement]

It has come to my attention that there is a malicious post aimed to discredit the work done by my Grassroots Leaders and me.

The post claimed that a “Malay MP” had informed a couple of senior citizens to “just move out” if they were “dissatisfied” that a lift was not able to be constructed leading to their unit.

This is untrue. Those who know me and who got to know me in the course of my visits will know this is not true.

Throughout my house visits at the various segmented blocks of Keat Hong, I had taken in the feedback and even took photographs of the corridor landings of some of the affected units. I had also pressed HDB for the previous explanations and studies done.

I have always informed residents that I will try my best to have HDB and other relevant agencies to study the possibilities of building a lift to the affected units. In fact, I am in the process of obtaining all the relevant information and floorplans from HDB to study the matter further.

Even as HDB had replied that the possibility was not high, I am committed to provide alternative solutions to the residents in order to minimise their inconvenience.

I thank the residents in the affected blocks for their understanding and patience while my team look for solutions.
