There have been a number of knife fights in Singapore in recent days, from slashing of strangers with a knife because they refuse to buy them cigarettes to cutting a colleague’s neck for giving them advice.

And today, we have this.

Man Arrested After Attacking 4 People with a Knife in an HDB Flat at Bukit Merah

On 6 June at 6 am, police officers that were patrolling the area were approached by a 59-year-old woman with bloodstained hands at level 1 of Block 2 Jalan Bukit Merah Road.

Apparently, a 48-year-old man had entered the second floor flat while four people were asleep and attacked the two women, a 39-year-old Vietnam national and a 59-year-old Malaysian national, with a knife. Two men living in the house came to the women’s aid.

The attacker was subdued and arrested by the police for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, possession of an offensive weapon and drug-related offences.

Three of the injured suffered knife wounds while the fourth person fell down a flight of stairs while fleeing from the scene. Another man, a 31-year-old male tenant, who was sleeping in a separate room escaped the unit to seek help.

There were five people living in the flat, and four of them were conveyed to the hospitals. Two of them are in stable condition and the other two are ongoing medical treatment.

“The man is believed to have acted alone and preliminary investigations do not suggest this to be an act of terror,” the Singapore Police Force said in its news release.

“He has been traced for several drug offences since 1991, and was last released from prison on Oct 6, 2020, for his last drug-related conviction, where he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and six strokes of the cane.”

The police are investigating the case and stepped up their patrols in the area.

Other Knife Fights

In other news, an angry 52-year-old hawker chopped off a man’s middle finger with a bread knife.

The incident occurred near Bukit Batok Street 31, during the fine night of 30 June 2019. The injured man in question, a 56-year-old retiree, was happily indulging in the tipsy pleasures of alcohol when he spotted hawker Lim Boon Cheng, 52, sitting nearby and staring at him.

The injured promptly greeted Lim’s family in a series of friendly Hokkien words, angrily asking him why he was looking.

Lim was, unsurprisingly, offended. What was more surprising was his response: he ran back to his vegetables stall and produced three long, menacing knives. Keeping a 30-cm-long bread knife for himself, he tossed the other two to the injured, challenging him to a knife “duel”.

In the spirit of an honourable duel in true gentlemanly fashion, however, the injured man only raised a plastic chair in self-defence.

Here’s some advice: don’t bring a plastic chair to a knife fight.

Instead of running for his life the moment Lim left, however, he decided to chase after him, and was greeted by a swing of the knife.

His right middle finger was gone.

Lim pleaded guilty on 26 March to one charge of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon and one charge of committing a rash act. He was sentenced to 17 months in jail, for an offence that carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment.
