In addition to the airline and tourism industries, the COVID-19 has greatly devastated the Food and Beverage (F&B) industry as well due to the no dine-in rule back when cases are on an all-time high.

Some businesses affected by the pandemic had to pivot to other ventures, while others had to get creative to capture new opportunities, such as the rise of “remote fitness”, the boom in e-commerce sales, and the birth of cloud kitchens.

Fortunately for us, the no dine-in rule has been lifted for the fully vaccinated and considering that our country has hit the 70% full vaccination milestone, this means about 70% of us can finally enjoy our meals and late-night “yumchas” while dining in at the kopitiam or restaurant of our choice.

What about the remaining 30% though?

That’s the question the House of Seafood in Punggol asked themselves and they have come up with a pretty unique solution to address the issue.

Dining in? More like Driving In!

Dining in is one of the several benefits the fully vaccinated can enjoy now in Singapore.

However, if you’re partially vaccinated or unvaccinated yet, know that you can still enjoy the delicious crabs (as well as other seafood) at the House of Seafood in the Punggol Settlement, although it would be a tad different.

Taking a leaf out of Padi House restaurant in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, where each set meal was served on a customised tray that fits in the space between the driver and the steering wheel, the House of Seafood is now offering “drive-in service” where you can “dine in” your car.

In their Facebook post, they boasted of having more than 200 parking spots in their open-air car park.

To enjoy their in-car dining experience, you just need to choose your favourite parking spot, book that slot, and order your food in advance.

You can do so by either calling the House of Seafood at 6466 9000 or shoot them a message on Facebook.

No Alcohol Served

However, if you’re looking forward to a cool glass of champaigne to wash down the crab meat, well… that’s not going to happen.

The House of Seafood pointed out that as they condone “irresponsible drink and drive practices”, they will not be serving alcohol for customers who drove-in.

Creative Marketing that Didn’t Always Pan Out

The House of Seafood is known in Singapore for its creative marketing.

Though, unlike Durex’s marketing, not all of them are hits.

For instance, back in June, their chief executive officer (CEO), Francis Ng, was spotted “walking” their crabs in Punggol Park.

He ended up having a good talking-to about animal welfare from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES).

In 2019, he was also lambasted for setting up a live crab claw machine where customers can try to grab the live crabs instead of stuffed toys from standard claw machines.

In both incidences, he had to apologise for being cruel to the crabs.
