Oscars who? We have our own local celebrities to root for!

Consumers of Mediacorp’s Channel 8 content would be very familiar with the annual Star Awards, where local actors and creators receive awards and recognition for outstanding performances of the year.

One of the most highly anticipated and coveted awards of the night would be the Top 10 Most Popular Male/Female Artiste Award. Some might say that this award is a true mark that you have made it in the industry.

To qualify for the Top 10 Most Popular Male/Female Artistes, individuals must meet certain criteria: they must either have a lead role or be the main host in at least one Eligible Programme, or serve as a supporting role, episodic host (for video), or co-host (for audio) in either at least 3 Eligible Programmes or a total of at least 30 episodes across all Eligible Programmes.

Additionally, their professional screen acting and/or screen/audio hosting experience must exceed 5 years as of January 1, 2023. However, cameo appearances and experience before the age of 18 are not considered in this calculation.

Set to be held live on 21 April 2024, one artiste in particular has made an interesting offer to her fanbase to spur on voters after she has been nominated in the Star Awards.

Stand a Chance to Win Lunch Date with a Local Actress!

In an Instagram post dated 18 March 2024, local actress Chantalle Ng wrote that she is happy to have been nominated for both the Top 10 award and the Best Couple award (the latter alongside actor Desmond Tan).

“I’ve decided to hold an exclusive lunch with my top 5 supporters this Star Awards, visit @chantallesclub to find out how to stand a chance! See you!” the post concluded.

Ng is best known for her stellar performances in local works like 2017’s While We Are Young, 2021’s The Heartland Hero and most recently, 2023’s All That Glitters.

If you visit Ng’s fanclub page over at @chantallesclub on Instagram, a post would read, “The top 5 voters will stand a chance to win an exclusive lunch outing with her! The venue for lunch will be handpicked by Chantalle.”

In order to cast their votes, fans can visit the Star Awards voting page, sign into their meconnect account, and cast up to 10 votes per category.

In order to stand a chance to win a lunch with Ng, however, fans and supporters must send a video screen recording of them using all 10 votes on the actress for the Top 10 Most Popular award, and one time for the Best Couple award.

The video recording must then be sent to their Telegram channel, @votingmessenger.

Ng has also commented on her fanclub page’s post, stating, “See you top 5 supporters!”

This year’s Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste category pits more than 50 local actresses and entertainers against one another, while the Male category sees around 60 nominees.

Ng’s offer was not the strangest thing local artistes have done to entice votes during the Star Awards season.

Just last year in 2023, Healing Heroes star actress Ann Kok, in a collaboration with Cold Flings, held a giveaway of 100 scoops of Dark Chocolate Collagen + Probiotics ice cream to show her appreciation towards her fans and voters.

Very hearteningly, that was the same year the 50-year-old actress clinched her 10th Top 10 Most Popular award, allowing her to ascend to the ranks of All-Time Favourite Artiste.

Local deejay-host Marcus Chin also pulled out all of the stops that year by launching a special incentive of offering a lucky draw for package tours to South Korea or China worth S$6.5K  to those who vote for him at least 10 times.

Additionally, fans who vote for him 10 times will also have the opportunity to win two pairs of tickets for a yacht trip.

The 30th Star Awards will be held at The Theatre at Mediacorp on 21 April 2024. You can catch it live at 7PM on Channel 8, Channel U, mewatch and on Mediacorp Entertainment’s YouTube channel!
