Since Dec 2021, Mahathir has been in and out of the hospital three times.

The first was on 16 Dec 2021 when he was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for a full check-up and further observation.

Less than a month later, the former prime minister was admitted to the institute again, this time for an elective medical procedure.

And on 22 Jan 2022, Mahathir was admitted to the IJN once again, and this time, it seemed serious.

Serious Health Scare

A UMNO member said that Mahathir was in “critical condition” and “Mahathir pass away” trended on Facebook.

Thankfully (for fans of the former PM), it was later reported that Mahathir’s condition was stable.

His daughter, Marina Mahathir, also revealed that her father “showed signs of improvement” and could “joke around” with the family.

But what happened? And what’s going to happen for Mahathir in the future?

Well, the man of the day himself decided to answer this question personally through a video.

Mahathir Finally Spoke Out About His Health in a 1-Min Video

In the video, Mahathir informed viewers that he has recovered partially from the most recent episode.

His days are now filled with travelling to and from the hospital because there are still medical procedures that must be done.

His daily routine involves him travelling back home daily from the morning till the evening before he goes back to the hospital.

His office announced that he was allowed to do that until 2 Feb 2022, and is undergoing physiotherapy and other treatments at IJN.

Mahathir took the chance to thank people who sent flowers and get well cards and hopes to make a full recovery in the future.

Heart Troubles in the Past

Although we have little details of Dr Mahathir’s admission, we know that he has suffered heart troubles in the past.

He’s had three heart attacks—one in 1989, and two in 2006. He had also undergone one bypass surgery at Kuala Lumpur Hospital in 1989, and another one at IJN in 2007.

Dr Mahathir had previously been hospitalised several times for chest infection as well. The most recent one was in 2018 when he was admitted to the IJN.
