The Phase 2 announcement comes as a surprise to many people.

A pleasant surprise, yes, but still a surprise.

In Phase 2, people are allowed to dine in again at F&B outlets yet some outlets find themselves unprepared for the sudden decision.

Not All Restaurants Will Reopen on 19 June As Some Hadn’t Prepared for the Early Reopening

According to the Straits Times, many restaurants had said that they will be ready for dine-in again by 19 June after a thorough cleaning of the premises.

Sushi Kimura in Palais Renaissance, Ichigo Ichie in Robertson Quay and The Gyu Bar in Stevens Road will all be ready for business:

“We had already implemented social distancing measures before the circuit breaker. The measures we instituted for delivery operations such as more regular sanitising, more stringent safety processes in food-handling will now be continued for dining-in.”

Burnt Ends in Teck Lim Road will also be ready and its staff is practising on how service will be run to ensure the safety of customers.

For people who love white beehoon, the White Restaurant will also be opening all of its six outlets, including the one at Jewel Changi.

Not Every Restaurant Will Be Open, However

Remember how Minister Chan Chun Sing spoke about businesses having to retain staff in preparation for D-Day?

Well, this is what he was talking about.

Kam’s Roast foresees a possible problem in the near future.

Its staff were redeployed to handle takeaways and delivery orders, which has increased by 40% during the circuit breaker period.

Even though dine-in is available from 19 June, they are not foreseeing a drop in orders, which is why they are now looking for more manpower.

TungLok Group will also be opening only 18 out of its 25 outlets on 19 June. These outlets have been offering takeaways and deliveries for the past two months.

Four of its other restaurants, TungLok Signatures in Clarke Quay Central and Changi City Point, LingZhi Vegetarian in Liat Towers, and Taste by TungLok in Park Regis Singapore, will only open on 1 July.

Many of its staff have been redeployed to its manufacturing and catering section and can’t be moved back that quickly.

Other Restaurants That Will Not Be Opened On 19 June:

  • Firebake, a Western restaurant and bakehouse in East Coast Road (No opening date because they can’t get enough manpower)
  • Italian restaurant Buona Terra in Scotts Road (Opening on 25 June)
  • Cocktail bar and restaurant Lumo in South Bridge Road (Opening on 22 June)

Expect Huge Crowds

If you’re thinking of going out for a good meal on 19 June, be prepared for huge crowds.

Several restaurants, including The ilLido Group, which runs a chain of Italian F&B outlets, started receiving bookings the moment news about Phase 2 were announced.

Three restaurants were fully booked for the weekend.

LeVeL33, a craft brewery and lounge also received bookings within minutes of the announcement.

With that said, do remember that Phase 2 isn’t permission to go all out and be crazy.

Let’s all mask up and go out in moderation so that we can reach Phase 3 as fast as possible.
