Building painting and window cleaning while being lowered down by cables or strong ropes tens of stories above ground can be risky business.

There are always fail-safes in place, but sometimes accidents do occur.

Fortunately for this pair of workers, one of the residents opened a window and effectively saved their lives.

One of the Gondola Cables Dislodged

The incident happened at Block 176D Edgefield Plains, Punggol, around 4pm on 18 February.

According to the husband and wife who had saved the two workers, aged 57 and 52 respectively, they were in the living room when they first heard a loud bang.

They peered towards the source of the commotion and saw a gondola outside.

The wife then opened the window to check on the situation, only to find that the gondola was dangling at a steep angle with a mass of cables on top of the metal structure.

Since one of the cables had snapped and broken off, the gondola was at the risk of tilting even further, which might cause the workers to fall off at any time.

The gruesome consequence to that accident is something no one wants to witness.

Couple Hauled the Workers Through their Window

In a timely manner, the couple quickly opened their living room windows to help pull the workers into their house.

The husband told Shin Min Daily News: “Fortunately, my wife and I were at home at that time, otherwise the consequences would have been unimaginable.”

Certainly, the couple had literally given the two workers a window of opportunity to escape from the near-accident unscathed.

A breath of relief for the two workers, and kudos to the married couple for their swift rescue.

Photos of the incident were captured by another resident, a 55-year-old woman.
